5 Things You Should Be Doing as a Family

5 Things You Should Be Doing as a Family

When Joseph’s brothers sold him to the5-things-you-should-be-doing-as-a Ishmealites who brought him to Egypt they had no idea what that would mean for the future of their family. What they meant for evil, God had a plan for good.

I won’t go into the whole story of how Joseph came to live in Egypt right now. If you don’t know the story, I suggest you take a minute to read Genesis 37-45.

Where Exodus 1 starts out is Joseph’s entire family…his father, brothers, and all their familes, are moving together to Egypt. The Bible says, “every man and his household came with Jacob” (Joseph’s father).

Now, this family doesn’t exactly have a great track record for being a big happy family. Jacob himself didn’t get along with his brother. And Joseph’s own brothers sold him into slavery. They have definitely had some rough patches and things to work through.

But then here, they are moving together with Jacob…as a family.

And what becomes of the children of Israel?

“And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty…” Exodus 1:7

Okay, they had a lot of kids. They grew into a 5-things-you-should-be-doing-as-a-1large family. But that is not what I want to focus on right here. I see that they were exceeding mighty.

They moved as a family and became exceeding mighty.

When we do things as a family, one unified unit, God blesses and makes our families mighty.

What changes can you make in your home today to help your family move as one unified unit?

  1. Family devotions. Take a few moments each morning or evening (or both!) to read the Bible and pray together. This matters.
  2. Eating supper together at the table. Talk about the day instead of staring at the tv.
  3. Serving. Find a ministry to do together. This can be something at the church- sing a special, shovel the driveway, etc. This can be something from home like baking cookies for someone or writing notes of encouragement. The opportunities are literally endless.
  4. Hobby/activity. Find something your family enjoys doing together. This may take some experimenting and discovering if something doesn’t instantly pop into your mind.
  5. Talk. This may sound like a no-brainer but it’s so important. Don’t just talk about the chores that need done or bills that need paid. Talk to your kids about what is important to you and how you feel about things. Invite them to talk to you about the same. Ask your spouse how their day was and then…LISTEN to their answer. Put down the iPad, put down the remote, put down the spatula or dish rag. Listen to them.

What ways can you already think of to help your family walk and move as one unified unit? What changes need to be made?

  1. I really love how you mentioned to serve together in ministry. I think this is so important to do with your children and to teach them to do it. Everything me and my husband volunteer to, we take our kids, even the infants. If we are invited somewhere for ministry, we take them, if we go to a prayer meeting we take them. This has became a way of life for them and to watch them mature in the Lord and know the importance of helping the elders or respecting prayer time, ect., is just a blessing! I do not know what there life will be when grown but I truly hope my husband and I set a great example to them of what living in Christ is. Thank you for the post!
