Date Night Game Night for Two

Date Night Game Night for Two

I took this photo last Friday night at 8:30. See that sunshine? It stayed there until past 2 AM. In Inuvik we have reached our (almost) 24 hour daylight. I think it might set for an hour or two- that’s it.breakup2017.jpg

Remember as a kid when it was a bedtime and you’d say, “But it’s still light out!”? That’s how I feel most nights. I look outside and see the sunshine and feel like it’s calling me. I get antsy sitting around on beautiful nights. I bet a lot of you would be the same way.

But after the kids are tucked into bed we are in for the night. We can’t go out and enjoy the sunshine (except the occasional kids free night when they are at their grandparents…like the night I took the above photo).

Winter time I am good to throw in a movie (check out our favorite date night movies here) or maybe our favorite tv series but in the summer I am more interested in doing something.

Shane and I have a handful of games that we really enjoy playing together. There are very few two player games that we really enjoy but I thought I would share with you the ones that we do play and have a lot of fun with.

So make some popcorn, grab some gummy worms and check out these games.

1. Rivals for Catan Settlers of Catan is possibly maybe our favorite game. So when we discovered Rivals for Catan- the two player version- we were so excited! It is a lot of fun. It can be played with up to 6 players but it is just as fun with just 2 people.  If you already love Settlers of Catan you have to try this. If you haven’t played Settlers of Catan I highly recommend that for your next group game night. Rivals for Catan possibly our favourite two player game so I think this is a must try for your date night!

2. SKIP BO Card Game  Before we had kids Shane and I lived in a little remote community called Aklavik. We just lived there for a few months, covering for a preacher who was out of town. But when you live in a small community like that everything closes by 8 and there is really nothing to do. We had only each other’s company for months. During that time we played Skip-Bo pretty often. It became a big competition for us and we had a lot of fun with it.

3. Cowboy Checkers– I have mentioned this game before. Shane discovered it on a video game (crazy way to discover a game like this). He described it to me and we made our own board using the back of a cereal box (the brown side). You can check it out on Amazon by clicking the link above or you can make your own like I did (click here for my tutorial.) We have a lot of fun with this game. It can be a really fast game so we usually play best out of 3 or best out of five. It is extremely strategic so don’t be fooled by it’s simplicity!

There are also a couple card games we have fun playing. I tried looking them up for you but apparently they are no existent to the internet. So you will just have to come visit me so I can teach you how to play! Or, just email me 🙂

I would love to learn some more games that are fun for two players. Do you have any to share with me? Have you played these games that I have listed? Which is your favourite?

  1. What a beautiful view, I don’t think I could ever sleep!! My husband and I love playing games together too : ) Battle Sheep and 10 Days in the USA (also sets for other countries or continents) are both two-player favorites! Thanks for these- I’ll have to look them up!

    1. Yes, the Arctic has the most beautiful views! Those games sound like ones we would like…I have never heard of them but I am excited to look them up. Obviously my list is small so I’d be happy to try out some new ones. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I’m so glad I clicked over to visit from Susan Eller’s site today! Settlers of Catan is one of my favorite games but I didn’t know about Rivals of Catan. I’m so happy to hear there’s a version that can be played with just 2 people! Thanks for sharing this!

    1. I always feel like instant best friends when someone else says they love Catan! I hope you try out Rivals for Catan…if you love settlers you will love Rivals!! Thanks for stopping by!!

  3. We used to play canasta a lot. We would each play two hands (I guess it’s a four-person game, because otherwise I don’t know why we’d do that.) We liked skip-bo a lot when my kids were growing up. (And Uno) One two-person game we like is Mastermind. — Thanks for sharing, Sandy. 🙂

    1. I’ve never heard of Canasta but I am going to look it up. We often will have other people here for games so maybe that would be a fun one to include then, too. I have mastermind! My husband doesn’t care for it but my son likes to play with me. Thanks for the suggestions!

  4. Sandy, what an amazing view! I love it when the sun begins to shine and the seasons begin to change! I’ve never heard of cowboy checkers, but it sounds so fun! Thanks for the great ideas! We’re neighbors today on Faith Filled Friday, see you next time!

  5. We love playing cards, too, but very seldom play just the two of us because, as you pointed out, there aren’t too many games that are really competitive for two. We’ll have to check out your suggestions. Blessings to you up north!
