We are all about smoothies over here. We eat them for breakfast, for lunch, and for snacks (typically not all in the same day). Point is we really like them. I like them because they are healthy and I can cram (almost) all the food groups into one smoothie. My kids like them because they taste so amazing. Win win!
When it comes to smoothies the possibilities are just about endless. You can make such a wide variety of combinations you’ll never get tired of them. And it’s super simple.
First, start with your base.
You want this to be something frozen. Depending on what I have on hand this can be either ice cubes or frozen fruit. Blueberries, strawberries, peaches, mango, banana, cherries, pineapple, mixed fruit, etc. I don’t suggest trying all at once but hey it’s your smoothie.
Second, you want some umph.
Pack some good stuff in there. This is where I will sneak in the spinach (frozen or fresh). Depending on the base I’ve chosen I sometimes will add some soy butter (peanut butter, almond butter, etc). Soy butter tastes great with frozen blueberries. If you have some protein powder get that in there. Greek yogurt would also go great here.
Third, let’s put in some mmmmm.
Vanilla, cocoa powder, agave, honey, etc. (again, not all into one smoothie). Choose something that compliments the other flavours you’ve chosen and throw it in there. Not a lot, just enough.
Last, all you need is some liquid.
It really depends on what you already have in your smoothie for what you want your liquid to be. Milk (almond, coconut, soy, 1%, 2%, etc…you do you) is usually my go to option. That’s because I like the creamy chocolatey smoothie over the fruity smoothie. But my kids really like the fruity smoothie so if we are running low on milk some orange juice will go in there. Pineapple juice is also a yum option. How much liquid you use depends on how thick you want your smoothie to be. Try less and add more if you need to.
See, a smoothie is the easiest meal ever! Take it on the go or sit and sip at it a while. You really can’t go wrong with a smoothie.
I shared my recipe for a delicious Banana Split Smoothie a while ago and today I will share my kids new favourite which is a delicious strawberry smoothie. They actually call it strawberry ice cream. They gobble it up faster than I can make it some days.
You will notice in this recipe I use agave syrup. I use this as a sweetener because it is all natural and sweetens without raising the blood sugar. It’s a great alternative to sugar in this type of recipe. I know, “sugar is sugar”, but this is what I choose for my kids. It tastes great and I highly suggest it! We use it the same way we use honey or pancake syrup. It’s very versatile.
