Do you remember the movie It Takes Two? I remember watching it as a kid when Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were so popular. Sorry if I am making you feel old right now, but that movie is 23 years old.
Funny, though, that a movie that I watched 23 years ago I can still remember so distinctly the one scene where the rich girl eats her first sloppy joe. She isn’t so sure about it at first but as she starts eating she can’t get enough of it and starts shoving it all over her face as she eats it.
What is it about sloppy joes that is so wonderful?
They’re so basic. I feel like I almost always have all the ingredients I need in my cupboard.
They’re so simple to make. You can whip them up in no time at all. It’s a great supper for when you don’t have a lot of time or even to freeze and pull out later for a quick supper.
Everyone loves them. At least in my family everyone loves them. Do you know anyone that doesn’t love sloppy joes?
Last Saturday we tried a whole new sloppy joe. Shane sent me a recipe he found on Pinterest. I made it and we were like eww gross. Not where you thought I was going with that is it?
But seriously, they were gross. It tasted like ketchup- and we didn’t even add ketchup. But there is no way I was dumping that gross supper. I opened up the frig and cupboards and started adding typical sloppy joe ingredients to it. It didn’t take long for this new sloppy joe to taste amazing…and become my new favourite sloppy joe.
I am pretty convinced it will be yours, too.
This is your new favourite sloppy joe recipe.
Right away you will notice the coleslaw on top. Even if you normally don’t like coleslaw, don’t skip it. I feel like I need to reinforce that statement.
DO NOT SKIP THE COLESLAW.
My husband doesn’t really like coleslaw but he was adding it by the spoonful to his sandwich. It just pairs that well with the sloppy joe. So, don’t skip the coleslaw.
If you are unsure of how to make it, I just mixed together some miracle whip, water, and sugar and poured it over the coleslaw mix you can buy at the grocery store. Or just buy some already made if you have that option.
Another surprising factor to this sloppy joe is the peperoncini peppers. I really almost skipped these. Lately I have not been in the mood for spicy and as I sliced up the peppers I was sure I wouldn’t like it. But it made all the difference in this sandwich. I only added a few small slices onto my sandwich so it wasn’t over bearing. It wasn’t too hot (probably because of all the coleslaw) but you could taste the excellent flavour it gave. So, don’t be afraid of the peppers.
You can see a few of my peppers fell off my sandwich there on the right. Don’t worry- they were put back in their place before I ate my sloppy joe.
Ok, so here is the recipe for your new favourite sloppy joes!

Before going grocery shopping I always look at what the Checkout 51 app has on it’s list. If what I need is on their list I can get cash back on those items. Free money! So be sure to get that app on your phone and benefit from it!
I put hoagie buns in the recipe but really use whatever buns you have on hand. I used delicious Gluten Free Hamburger Buns . They were excellent with this recipe.
