(And Joshua Said) Fear Not

(And Joshua Said) Fear Not

You’ve used a sponge right? To wipe counters, fear not clean walls, wash dishes. I think most of us understand the basic concept of a sponge. It’s dry and empty but when pushed down into warm, soapy water it comes up heavy and full. It’s dripping water everywhere it’s taken because it is so full.

I know it’s been a while since my last Fear Not post. But last time I talked about how Joshua was low on the encouragement. Achan’s sin had affected the whole camp and Joshua was not in good spirits at all. God encouraged him, though, and Joshua pressed on for the Lord. (You can read the whole post here.)

Joshua was that sponge: dry and empty.

The Lord filled him up with warm soapy water and now he is dripping everywhere with this encouragement.

Joshua 10:25 says, “And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: For thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.”

Two chapters ago it was Joshua needing this pep talk and how he is giving it to the children of Israel. When you are full it will come out and touch other people.

So fill up. Don’t stay dry and useless.

How can I fill up and be an encouragement to other people?

  1. Read my Bible- daily. Everyday. I can’t expect to be full if I am not feeding myself. I cannot expect to be encouraged if I have not been in the Word.
  2. Be among Christians and other godly influences. Just like when I talked about how to guard your heart, who you hang around will make a big difference on how full your sponge is. Some people suck it out of you, some people fill it up. Find the right friends.
  3. Be in church. God wouldn’t tell us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves unless He knew we needed it. And we do need it. If you want to be encouraged be hearing preaching from God’s Word regularly.

And remember, a sponge eventually uses up it’s water. So don’t try to be effective if you haven’t dipped into the warm soapy water in a while. Be filling up regularly…not just one time.
